The Cost of Obedience by Ellen C.

God's only Son was obedient...even unto death. Jesus was undeserving of the humiliation and torture He received, but He chose to obey. What a picture of true submission and denial of self. He knew what He was about to suffer and kept His eye on the prize (so to speak)...of course that's an understatement, but I'm sure you get the gist of what I'm trying to say.

We get a glimpse of the trememndous cost of His obedience in the following verses, Luke 23:34-38:

Then Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do." ...And the people stood looking on. But even the rulers with them sneered, saying, "He saved others; let Him save Himself if He is the Christ, the chosen of God." The soldiers also mocked Him, coming and offering Him sour wine, and saying, "If You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself." And an inscription also was written over Him in letters of Greek, Latin, and Hebrew:

THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

How do we perform in the area of obedience? If we obey God...it is going to cost us something or someone. Do we compromise our position for the sake of keeping peace? Do we stay quiet when people mock our Lord? Do we go along with the crowd? Or...do we take a stand against the 'wrongs' we encounter?

"As followers of Christ...obedience should be a delight. We should 'want' to please God. If we obey God, He will look after those who have been pressed into the consequence of our obedience. We have to simply obey and leave all consequences unto Him" (Oswald Chambers).

Let's not decide to obey based on circumstances because He is there in the midst of the storms in our lives. We simply cannot dictate to God as to what He will allow to happen in our lives. This is the cost of obedience.
