Reality Check by Ellen C.

Philippians 2:3, “Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself.”
Growing up in a “me’ society is not very conducive to the character that God wants us to have. Have you noticed that most people act like the world revolves around them? They seem oblivious to the fact that others inhabit this planet alongside them. You see it everywhere...impatient patrons, rude drivers, sassy children and a total disrespect towards authority. We are a society of self-absorbed people….not caring for the well-being of others without some prompting. It’s like we didn’t read the memo from God that says, ‘love your neighbor as yourself.’ (Matthew 22:39)
2 Timothy 3:2-5 says, “For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away!” I wonder if this ‘form of godliness’ includes those people that act like they don’t want attention for what they’ve done or said, but in reality…they are begging for it.
Do you want to be recognized for what you’ve done or who you are? Do you need a pat on the back when you do something that is not selfish? In Luke 22:24-27 the scene is set …an argument ensues over who was the greatest among them or in modern day English—who is the most important disciple?: Jesus simply answers, “…I am among you as the One who serves.” Service is the key here…we are to have an attitude of service. This is what pleases the Lord…not making a name for ourselves…after all…He served while He lived among us.
