Bless Her Heart! by Ann L.
Zane, my husband, recently attended a team building session at his work. A professional young lady was conducting the meeting. The class was designed to train the staff to interact better with clients and fellow staff members. Needless to say the meeting was pretty dull and very serious.
She led the group through a few exercises and then asked for input on proper responses during various situations. She made the mistake of turning to my wanna be stand-up comic husband and asked, "What would be a proper response when someone proposes what you think is a stupid idea or makes a nonsensical statement?"
My husband responded in all seriousness, "I would say, 'Well, bless your heart." The room erupted into laughter. The young lady quickly said, "No, you can't say that! In the South Mr. LaPlant, that means you think someone is dumb!"
Not to be put off Zane said, "I know what it means! It also works if they have an ugly baby bring stuffed tomatoes to the family reunion." She lost control of the meeting. Bless her heart!
You'll Get Used To It a true story by Ann-Louise
In the summer of 1988, after completing nursing assistant training, I was assigned to work on a locked Alzheimer's unit at a large nursing home. One day, my co-worker was running late and after the day shift left, I was alone with 16 residents. I began my duties without her and a little later, had a need to use the restroom. It was then that I realized I had not taken a set of keys from the nurse's station at the start of the shift. The staff facilities were located in the outer hallway. Using the phone in the living area, I called the three adjoining units and the nurse's station to ask if someone would come and unlock the door. No one answered. By this time the need was becoming an urgency so I stood at the doors at the end of the unit, peering through the safety glass, hoping someone would walk by and I could get their attention. Suddenly, there was a hand patting my arm. I turned to see a tiny, white-haired lady smiling at me through loose dentures saying, "Don't worry dear. It will be all right. They don't let me out either. You'll get used to it." :)
